PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Brothers and Sisters of Local 972,

I would like to explain a very important procedure available to all our members. It is called the grievance procedure.

At times in the working environment problems arise between management and our union brother and sisters. These disputes are usually settled between the stewards and first level supervisors. This is called the informal process. When disputes cannot be settled through the informal process or more serious problems arise, then the grievance procedure must be followed. There are several steps involved but the most important step is for you to file a written grievance.  The grievance form can be obtained from your local stewards or regional vice president. You must complete and sign a grievance form as well as provide proper documentation to enable the union to take the first steps toward obtaining a resolution of your problem. Once a grievance form is filed, it goes through specific chain of command. Most grievances have a quick turn around time of approximately one or two days. Others or more serious grievances require a meeting with upper management. When union officials and management cannot come together for a fair and honest disposition of the matter, then the grievance will go to the final step which is called arbitration. In arbitration¸ an independent arbitrator hears both parties information and issues a ruling on the case. See Article 37 Grievance and Arbitration Standard Grievance Procedure, page 123 of the Master Agreement.

I have touched on a portion of the grievance procedure in order to familiarize you with a very important tool that is available to help you solve problems with management. I would like to reiterate that you need to contact a union steward/union official, sign and file the grievance form for the process to move forward. I want all my brothers and sisters to know you are not alone. Your union is always there for you. Your executive board is working hard for you.  We have made great strides in the past six months on your behalf.

Please remember, together we are strong, alone we are weak.

Yours in solidarity

Richard
